Procedure — bottom drain / partial change (the routine method). Warm the transmission to 40–50°C, then unscrew the lower drain plug — a thin, steady stream indicates correct level; if insufficient, add fluid via the drain hole using a technical syringe. Do not check at high temperature (~80°C) — flow is excessive and the reading is inaccurate (though checking near idle temperature ~90°C is also accepted practice by some in the community on service visits — this is a documented disagreement).^{123456789101112} A partial change at 60,000 km typically drains ~4.5 L, replaces the filter, and refills; a full/complete drain-refill was historically done at 120,000 km. (2) While the pan is off, check the coarse metal mesh filter inside it and wash it with gasoline, kerosene, or carburetor cleaner. (3) Replace the pan gasket — old gaskets dry out and start leaking. (4) Refill either via the top filler near the heat exchanger, or via the drain hole using a syringe or gravity-fed container (never attempt gravity feed without a supporting container — it takes far too long otherwise). (5) Repeat the partial-exchange cycle 2–3 times total for the best overall fluid turnover. Fluid check and partial replacement without a dipstick (community procedure). The X80 has no transmission dipstick — fluid level is checked by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the pan: fluid flowing out steadily indicates a correct level. A partial replacement uses about 4 liters of fluid; replace the pan gasket during the service. While the pan is off, remove and inspect/clean the transmission filter element (steel mesh) and the interior of the pan for metal debris and magnetic contamination. Don't replace the drain-plug bolts if they haven't seized — reuse them with light lubrication. One reported case: an automatic-transmission car at 91,000 km with a history of jerking on 1-2-3 shifts — the recommended approach is to check the fluid level first, then proceed to a full fluid change if it's found low or dirty.^{4849505152535455565758}

50,000+ km used-car service procedure, restated (2024-08 report). For a used X80 at 50,000+ km: perform a partial (semi-flush) change first as a baseline. On the first pan-removal service (recommended for higher-mileage cars), clean the strainer thoroughly, install a new pan gasket (35168-TFA050), and refill with 4L (no pan removal) or 4–4.2L (with pan removal). ATF must carry the 3309 spec or Toyota TYPE IV equivalent — do not mix green and red fluids. Check used-car service history skeptically, since records may be incomplete.⁵⁹⁶⁰⁶¹
