Cabin air filter — debris/water and carbon vs. regular
Tags: #cabin-filter · #air-filter
Debris and water ingestion is a known design characteristic. Cabin air filters on the X80 accumulate leaves, other solid debris, and water — the air-intake system draws in both solid matter and moisture from wherever the intake sits, including water splashed up from puddles. Owner photos document heavy leaf/debris contamination after extended use without a filter change. The recommendation is to simply replace the filter periodically rather than try to clean it.123
Removing the factory "zhaba" intake plug — an immediate, no-cost water fix (2024-06 report). A separate, simpler mitigation than the netting/duct modifications below: removing (or partially covering) the factory air-intake plug, colloquially called the "zhaba" cap, prevents water from accumulating in the air-intake chamber in the first place. The plug is located below the windshield/hood junction area. One owner reports this was an immediate fix installed right after taking delivery of the vehicle, and it eliminated recurring water-saturated cabin filter problems for them — worth trying before investing in the netting or custom-duct approaches documented below, since it requires no purchase or fabrication.4
Reducing intake contamination. Two mitigation approaches discussed: (1) fit mosquito netting over the air-intake windows located under the hood/bonnet, below the windshield, to block leaves and water before they reach the intake; (2) briefly reverse the heater blower motor's polarity to blow accumulated debris back out of the intake duct. The community has also discussed custom 3D-printed or fiberglass air-intake ducts with additional filtration, aimed at stopping water vapor/spray from puddle crossings from reaching the cabin via the intake.567
Regular filters outperform activated-carbon filters for this car. Community consensus is that plain/regular cabin filters are superior to activated-carbon (charcoal) filters on the X80: carbon filters clog much faster and don't provide a meaningful odor-reduction benefit over a regular filter once saturated. A regular filter lasts a full service interval; a carbon filter would need monthly replacement due to rapid saturation, which isn't practical. The most effective way to control cabin odors is reported to be forcing outside/fresh air intake rather than relying on filter media type.8910
