TPMS sensor battery type and design

Prices and suppliers on this page are Russian-market (RUB, at the dates shown). Verify locally before relying on them in Syria.

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

TPMS sensors are sealed units, not designed to be disassembled for battery replacement — per design, the battery is not user-serviceable, so a dead battery normally means replacing the whole sensor.1234

DIY disassembly is possible but risky. Some owners have cut the sensor casing open, replaced the battery, and re-glued it back together; community estimate for this approach is a 50/50 success rate.45

Battery type: CR2450 (also reported as BR2450, and one source cites CR2050HR / SBO-T23 (Maxell)).6789 Cost comparison: a replacement battery runs about 1,000 RUB (RU market, September 2024), versus a higher cost for a brand-new sensor — so DIY battery swap is cheaper if it works, but the community's practical recommendation is to just buy a new sensor rather than risk a failed DIY repair given the coin-flip success rate.10689

Second confirmed teardown (2025-03/28 report). A separate owner successfully opened a sensor by applying solvent along the glued seam and carefully cutting with a utility knife, confirming a PCB inside. Battery identified as CR2450 or CR2430 (CR2450 has higher capacity). After replacement, the sensor must be reprogrammed with an Autel or similar diagnostic tool to be recognized by the car.11121314151617

Replace-all-four recommendation (2025-07/31 report). Owners note that when one sensor's battery dies, the other three usually fail within days to weeks (all installed at the same time, similar wear). Sensor batteries typically last 5–6 years. DIY battery replacement (knife + soldering iron) is described as extremely difficult with a real risk of not getting the sensor open successfully — attempt only with electronics experience; most owners simply replace all four complete sensors together for proper system programming.181920212223

Earliest documented opening method — heat gun + solvent (community reference). To access the internal battery without destroying the sensor: use a heat gun or hair dryer to carefully warm the plastic seams until the adhesive softens, then inject a solvent (e.g., acetone) along the seams with a syringe and needle to dissolve the glue further. Open carefully and peel the halves apart — this allows battery replacement without breaking the housing.242526

Alternate disassembly method — hacksaw + solder points (2025-11 step-by-step, ~10–20 min/sensor). A six-photo walkthrough documents an alternative teardown: (1) do not open the white rear cap; (2) cut along the right edge with a metal-cutting hacksaw; (3) carefully separate the halves; (4) cut the solder joints on both sides of the battery with a utility knife; (5) install the new battery and re-solder or use a clip to reconnect it.272829

Long-term tolerance of a failed TPMS system (2025-11 reports). Multiple owners report driving 3+ years with the TPMS warning light blinking continuously rather than fixing it — the full fix (4 sensors + programming) costs 4,000+ RUB, which several owners view as poor value, preferring to monitor tire pressure manually instead. Some individual sensors fail within 1.5–2 years of ownership, and (consistent with the replace-all-four note above) all four sensors can fail in the same general timeframe since they're installed together.3031323334353637

Full replacement cost and process, another case (2026-01 report). During a winter-wheel swap at 58,000 km, one owner had all four sensors replaced: OEM sensor set (4x) ≈ 7,000 RUB, wheel-swap-with-sensor-fitting labor ≈ 3,700 RUB, for a total of roughly 10,700 RUB (all RU market, January 2026). Each sensor requires custom programming per wheel position after installation, done by the dealer/shop performing the service; no programming problems were reported in this case. (A separately mentioned figure of ~23,000 RUB (RU market, January 2026) for the same visit refers to unrelated insurance costs, not the TPMS work itself.)38394041

Moscow-market sensor pricing (May 2026 report). OEM TPMS sensors from a local Moscow dealer run around 6,000 RUB (RU market, May 2026). Cheap non-OEM clone sensors from AliExpress (~800 RUB, RU market, seen May 2026) are reported to frequently fail with a module error — both Ozon and AliExpress clone units show high failure rates in owner reports, so the community favors OEM despite the higher price. Confirmed compatible sensor model for the X80: FS43X0L5.4243444546

Sensor programming/cloning is possible and can be done remotely (2026-05 report). Separate from battery replacement, FAW X80 TPMS sensors can be programmed or cloned after replacement using a dedicated TPMS programmer. One owner who acquired such a programmer offered a remote programming service to the community. To reprogram or clone a sensor, you need its sensor ID number, which can be read either directly off the physical sensor body or via vehicle diagnostics from the TPMS module.47484950

Dealer resoldering/reprogramming alternative, and a headunit-swap workaround (2026-08 report). Asked whether TPMS sensor batteries can be swapped, and which battery to buy,51 one owner replied that the sensors are not user-replaceable, but official dealers can resolder the battery directly onto the sensor's board or reprogram/flash a new sensor — a lower-risk (if pricier) option than opening the sensor yourself.52 The same owner described a separate practical workaround some use to sidestep expensive official TPMS sensor replacement entirely: buy a Chinese aftermarket "magnetic" head unit (e.g., the TAIS brand) bundled with a matching set of TAIS tire-pressure sensors, which work independently of the OEM TPMS hardware.52
