Cabin water leaks — causes and fixes

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
Cabin water leaks are one of the most commonly reported X80 problems, with several distinct entry points documented by the community.
Floor moisture under the driver's mat. Water accumulation under the driver's floor mat, especially as weather warms, has three documented causes: (1) the sunroof/roof drain is clogged or disconnected — a white plastic tube runs from the left front roof edge down the left A-pillar to exit outside the cabin; (2) the weatherstripping/hood seal is leaking, drawing water into air-intake areas; (3) the drain fitting at the exit point has loosened, letting water flow inside instead of out12345. Fixes: check the white drain tube along the left A-pillar for blockage or disconnection; inspect the hood seal for leaks; reseal loose fittings with sealant; periodically spray silicone lubricant on the sunroof seals to maintain water resistance6789.
Water leakage causing BSM (body/steering control module) failures. Cabin flooding — specifically water pooling under the driver's feet near the steering column — is a common X80 issue that causes contact oxidation inside the BSM (Body/Steering Module) block, in turn causing rear door lock malfunction and radio cutouts101112. Fix: locate and seal the water ingress point, dry the BSM block (some owners used an oven or hair dryer), and check the connector under the driver's seat for corrosion13141516.
Multiple leak paths — a consolidated diagnosis. A separate report lists three specific culprits found across cases: (1) a displaced/torn plug in the wiring passage between the engine bay and cabin compartments; (2) a clogged windshield cowl drain needing cleaning; (3) a factory-defect seal at the driver-side engine-to-cabin compartment boundary, fixed under warranty but requiring disassembly of the fender, engine bay area, and dashboard. Advice: catch the problem early, before water damages the interior17.
Water found inside the vehicle after garage parking. After roughly 8 hours in an underground garage following 48 hours of rain, one owner found water inside the vehicle with no clear single cause identified — candidates include melted snow runoff, rainwater trapped in the exhaust heat-shield or body cavities that evaporated later and condensed indoors, or water already sitting under the floor mats/carpets. No definitive resolution was reached in this case; the suggested first step is checking under the mats and interior floor181920212223.
Pre-facelift (Dorest) generation — documented leak sources. Pre-facelift X80s have several documented water-ingress paths distinct from or in addition to the above: (1) the drain-tube plastic elbows for the door/sunroof drainage don't fit the body properly — replacing with thick silicone hose or applying sealant helps; (2) the decals under the wheel arches detach over time and water enters through the resulting gaps; (3) drainage holes in the A/B pillars clog; (4) the windshield gasket may also be a contributor242526. Water accumulation under the wheel arches leads to corrosion. Full diagnosis requires removing the dashboard to trace the water's path. A related risk: the radio/head unit can short out if not properly cooled, especially on units with the large touchscreen dial27. Separately (not a leak issue, but a related pre-facelift trait): pre-facelift engines have no hydraulic valve-clearance compensators, so valve adjustment must be done manually272829.
Water leak from the sunroof drain area — full diagnosis and repair. For water leaking specifically into the passenger footwell from the sunroof: check the drain-tube connections at the roof edges, particularly where the roof panel meets the door jamb. Causes and fixes: (1) clogged drainage passages collecting debris — clear the passages fully, including hose connections; (2) the plastic drain-angle connector at the door jamb leaking at its seams — replace with a rubber hose roughly 2 mm larger in diameter; (3) cracks in the sunroof frame or weatherstripping — reseal with the proper gasket; (4) water pooling in the "жаба" (cowl/air-intake area) — partially cover or remove the air-trap plug to let it drain3031323334. Restyled (post-refresh) models have an improved drain design compared to pre-facelift. Clearing all drain passages thoroughly and ensuring proper connector seating gives a permanent fix3536373839.
Restyled-model case: water under the driver's mat with no obvious source, plus a full BSM-corrosion cleaning method. On a restyled X80, an owner found water under the driver's floor mat; checking the connectors (unplugging/replugging them) did not fix an associated fault4041. Community troubleshooting steps: pull the BSM block and inspect for green corrosion, and also inspect the connectors under the seat for the same green corrosion42434445. A likely source specific to this generation: water leaking from the sunroof-drain tube under the cowl ("жаба") if the drains are blocked — on restyled cars this exact connection was already redesigned to fix a known leak point, so the drain-under-cowl area was suspected but not confirmed as the source in this case; the wet area was on the left side while the drain tube (visible to the right of the gas pedal) was checked and found dry464748. General notes from the same thread: pre-facelift cars can leak from almost any gap, including through the engine-bay firewall, while on restyled cars the drains under the cowl are the first thing worth checking4950. Separately, in the same vehicle, the rear-seat footwell ventilation ducts were found completely disconnected on both sides — unrelated to the water leak but worth checking during a related interior teardown51.
BSM contact-corrosion repair method — soldering flux and tinning. Once BSM (Body/Steering Module) contacts show green oxidation, the fix that gave a fully durable repair (2+ years with zero further faults) was: clean the corroded contact areas using soldering flux/acid and heat from a soldering iron, then tin the cleaned contacts52. After this treatment the connector fits very tightly when reinserted, but this is expected and the connection remains stable52. A simpler alternative mentioned in the same thread for lighter oxidation: wipe the corroded areas with alcohol or electrical-contact cleaner53. Critical prerequisite in both cases: eliminate the water-ingress source first — only fix the electrical contacts after the leak itself has been sealed, otherwise corrosion will return52.
Fogged windshield as a leak symptom. Water under the floor mats and in the spare-wheel well made the windshield fog repeatedly; see windshield fogging from floor water leaks54.
Loose sunroof drain plug, worsened by a loud subwoofer. Water leaked into the cabin near the steering column. The cause was the plug of the sunroof drain hose working loose from vibration, made worse by a loud subwoofer. The owner needed about a month to locate it, then re-seated and secured the plug55.
