Mechanical parking brake seized by corrosion
Tags: #parking-brake · #corrosion
A community member reported what appeared to be the first documented case of a mechanical parking-brake seizure caused by rust and corrosion (2024-09-02). Symptom: the parking-brake lever became stuck/jammed. On disassembly, internal components were extensively rusted, and the drive gear teeth were worn/stripped ("slicked off") by corrosion12. The parking-brake cover, once removed, could only be reattached with glue — no clips or bolts remained usable to refasten it, so the owner was unsure it would hold3. Likely resolution: the gear (and possibly the full parking-brake assembly) needs to be ordered and replaced outright rather than repaired in place4.
