Speedometer accuracy — factory offset vs. GPS speed
Tags: #speedometer
The factory speedometer on the X80 reads noticeably higher than actual GPS-measured speed. One owner's real top speed by GPS was no more than 180 km/h, while the speedometer reads well above the real speed at any given moment1. As a concrete data point: even after fitting slightly larger-diameter wheels (which would normally push an indicated speed lower for the same real speed), the owner still drives at 115 km/h on the speedometer under speed-camera enforcement while GPS shows the real speed as about 109 km/h1 — i.e. the factory gauge over-reads by roughly 5–6 km/h at that speed even with larger wheels fitted; the stock-wheel offset is implied to be larger still. Practical implication: speed-camera enforcement (in Russia) uses GPS/radar-accurate measurement, not the dashboard reading, so relying on the speedometer alone to judge legal speed margin is unreliable1.
