Front springs — breakage reports and causes

Material-quality concern — breakage in warm weather: multiple owners report OEM springs breaking during warm weather or even at idle (e.g. while changing spark plugs, with the car on ramps). The breakage is attributed to poor material quality and fatigue stress rather than insufficient thickness — some springs cracked despite being of the "thick" design, suggesting inconsistent quality control in OEM production batches. Aftermarket springs (genuine Mazda or LYNXauto alternatives) are reportedly more reliable, though they change suspension stiffness somewhat 1.

Failure pattern — lower-coil fracture: front springs commonly fail with a fracture in the lowest half-turn or full turn of the coil. The typical symptom is a periodic clunking sound over bumps while turning, which is sometimes mistaken for a failed stabilizer rod. Visual inspection may not reveal the crack until examined closely 2.

Spring failure with no impact — confirmed possible (April 2026): a community member asked whether a spring can simply snap while the car is parked, with no pothole or rough road involved. Confirmed: one owner had exactly this happen in autumn — got in the car, sat down, and heard a loud snapping sound; inspection found the front spring had broken. Supports the "material fatigue" explanation elsewhere on this card over an impact-based cause 34.

Front spring failure at 61,000 km: a stock front spring broke at 61,000 km. The owner drove for about a year accepting reduced comfort before deciding to upgrade to aftermarket springs 5.

Front spring broke at 62,000 km — upper control arm bushings fell out during the same job: a front spring broke (one side) at 62,000 km. During replacement, the upper control arm's sway-bar ball joints simply fell out of their bushings on removal, requiring re-pressing; the ball joints themselves were still serviceable (rated to last to ~100,000 km) but the upper control arm showed rust. KYB dampers were purchased for the same job but not yet installed at time of report. Recommendation: replace dampers and ball joints together around 100,000 km, since re-pressed ball-joint boots may only last another 30,000–40,000 km — see the upper control arm card for the ball-joint/bushing side of this job 6789101112.

Front spring failures — a recurring, established problem: front springs are a known, recurring failure point on the X80. One owner's spring failed at 61,000 km after 6 years of ownership; multiple other community members report the same failure pattern, with some moving to aftermarket springs as a result 131415.

Front coil failure at 200,400 km (both sides) — Suffix 1303 replacement; second failure timeline: one owner (А5) reported front coil-spring failure at 200,400 km: the left spring broke in two places, the right in one place; the suspension had felt very firm beforehand. Replacement: Suffix 1303 springs, which fit as a direct OEM-shape replacement. A second owner (Victor) reports his own springs lasted 61,000 km before failure — the left spring detached while the car was parked waiting at a school, and he continued driving about 800 km on only one working spring before replacing both. After replacement and roughly 7 precharge/settle cycles, the suspension became noticeably livelier 1617181920.

Front spring failures — 50,000–120,000 km range, ~5,000₽/pair (April 2024): another cluster of front coil-spring failure reports, mostly on the left spring, at mileages ranging from 50,000 to 120,000 km. Symptoms: sagging stance and visible cracks. Replacement springs sourced from Ozon for roughly 5,000₽ per pair (April 2024). Some owners note rear springs from other Mazda-platform models also fit as cross-brand replacements when needed 212223242526.

Front spring fracture — hidden break inside the rubber isolator section: a front spring broke while driving, with the fracture located in the lower section where the rubber isolator seats/compresses the spring — this location makes the crack not visible on casual inspection; it required close inspection (feeling by hand) to find, since it was hidden inside the rubber isolator area rather than on an exposed coil. Reported symptom before the crack was found: a steering-area noise/clunk during acceleration, initially suspected as brake pads or an engine mount before the spring break was located 272829.

Front spring break after 6 months parked, unrelated to driving stress: a front spring failed/broke after the car sat parked for six months in an underground garage, with no unusual driving stress reported beforehand — the owner only noticed the car sitting crooked when it was next taken in for service. This is a low-confidence, single report but suggests the possibility of fatigue/corrosion-driven failure even without active driving, not just a load- or road-shock-driven failure mode. Replacement spring ordered to spec SZ1303 3031.
