Front wheel hub — ABS sensor ring identification

Tags: #wheel-hub · #abs · #sensor · #part-number

Why it matters: front wheel hubs should include an ABS sensor ring — a magnetic ring mounted on the bearing — which is essential for wheel-speed sensing (ABS function). A hub without this ring will not support ABS.

Visual identification: (1) a dark/brown ring indicates the hub has ABS capability; (2) a shiny/bright ring indicates the hub is without ABS. This color difference is the quickest way to tell hubs apart by eye before installing.

Recommendation: always verify with the supplier before ordering, since visual identification from photos/listings can be ambiguous and mixing up the two hub types means losing ABS function ¹²³⁴⁵.

ABS wheel-speed sensor transfer when upgrading wheels: separate from the hub's built-in ABS ring above, the ABS wheel-speed sensor itself (mounted at the hub, reading the ring) can be unscrewed from the factory wheel/hub assembly and remounted on a new/aftermarket rim in the same position — no new sensor purchase is needed when switching to a same-diameter (e.g. 17-inch to 17-inch) wheel. Restyle vs. pre-restyle sensors differ in wiring-harness thickness, but both variants are removable/transferable ⁶⁷.
