Confirmed-compatible fluid brand — ZIC. ZIC-brand power steering fluid (PSF) is confirmed suitable for the X80's power-steering system. One owner referred to "our" original fluid when discussing it, suggesting an FAW-branded OEM PSF may also exist/be available, though this wasn't independently confirmed in the thread.¹²³

Level check and top-up. Power steering fluid level should be maintained at the proper mark on the dipstick/reservoir. If the level is at minimum but there's no visible leak, simply top up with the appropriate fluid — spec 3309 was cited for the correct fluid type.⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹

Full flush procedure (optional, not urgent unless fluid looks degraded). A complete fluid flush can be performed via the return-hose method: run clean fluid through the system continuously until the fluid discharging from the return line comes out clean. This can extend the system's service life. Emergency repair for a ruptured return hose. Fluid spec — Mobil 3309 / Type IV, or a matching multigrade synthetic/mineral oil. Restating and confirming the 3309 spec already noted above: Mobil 3309 or Type IV fluid is permitted for the GUR (power-steering) system. A synthetic/mineral multigrade oil ("мультик") is also acceptable as long as it matches FAW's approval for the spec. The same fluid can be used interchangeably in both the GUR and the transmission.^2223242526

Whining/howling noise from the engine bay — check GUR fluid first. A whining or howling noise from the engine bay, audible in the cabin at low RPM during acceleration and increasing during full wheel turns, has several possible causes, with GUR fluid level as the primary suspect: (1) low power-steering (GUR) fluid — check and top up first; (2) a worn bearing (alternator or another roller bearing); (3) a loose/slipping serpentine belt; (4) A/C-compressor-clutch engagement. First troubleshooting step: check and top up GUR fluid. If the noise continues afterward, inspect the GUR pump and steering rack for leaks. Reminder: the X80 uses hydraulic (not electronic) power steering, so this fluid-level check is a valid first diagnostic step for this noise pattern.^27282930

GUR fluid specification restated — ATF 3309 or Type IV, interchangeable. The X80's hydraulic steering system uses ATF 3309 or Type IV fluid — an older (3309, "vintage") and a newer (Type IV) specification that are compatible and can be mixed. When replacing the fluid, changing the entire volume gives the best results rather than a partial top-up.³¹³²³³
