Pulley bearing noise — progressive, cold-start-linked. A squealing/rustling noise from the engine bay, especially noticeable on cold starts and disappearing once the engine warms up, is commonly traced to a failing power-steering pump pulley bearing (ролик на насосе гидроусилителя). The condition worsens gradually: initially the noise disappears entirely once warm, but over time it stops disappearing and becomes constant, with visible bearing wobble/runout ("биение") eventually developing as the bearing degrades further. One owner's case started around 50,000 km. Lubrication is not a real fix — the pulley/bearing itself needs replacing^12345678.

Separate issue — burnt-oil smell traced to the power-steering line. A persistent, strong burnt-oil smell from the exhaust-manifold area (present for about a month in one report, with no visible smoke) can be caused by a leak in the power-steering oil supply line (маслопровод рейки), specifically the rubber hose section that routes directly over the exhaust. A leaking hose drips oil onto the hot exhaust surface, producing the burnt smell without necessarily producing visible smoke. Check underneath for a wet/oily rubber hose routed above the exhaust as the first diagnostic step^9101112.

Power steering fluid specification. X80 power-steering fluid must meet spec 3309 or Toyota Type IV; a multigrade specification can also be used as an alternative. This is the same specification as the automatic transmission fluid (AKPP)¹³¹⁴.

Fluid spec restated — Mazda ATF-MV or Dexron 3; caution on generic "MV" fluids. The correct fluid for the X80's power-steering system is Mazda ATF-MV (Mazda Automatic Transmission Fluid Multi-Vehicle). An accepted alternative: Dexron 3. Caution: generic multi-vehicle fluids marked simply "MV" alone may not meet the actual specification — use only fluids explicitly rated for Mazda ATF-MV or Dexron 3, not just any bottle labeled "MV"^15161718.

Further community-confirmed compatible fluid options for the X80's power steering: Mobil 3309, Toyota T4 spec, or a multi-specification ATF. Community experience confirms these multi-ATF options work in practice, consistent with the 3309/Toyota Type IV/Mazda ATF-MV/Dexron 3 options already documented on this card^192021222324.

Steering rack seal leak — OEM cost vs. Mazda 6 cross-fit vs. specialist repair. Separately from the pump/line issues above, the steering rack (рулевая рейка) itself can develop a seal leak from both sides. A new OEM rack costs approximately 25,000 RUB (RU market, February 2026) (price reported by an owner at 318,000 km). Mazda 6 I racks can be used as a cross-compatible substitute. Before committing to a full replacement, check the cost of a specialized steering-rack repair shop — repair may be more cost-effective than a new part^{2526272829303132}.

Fluid spec — earlier, independent report ties it to the manual-transmission fluid too, adds Dixtron-III. An earlier, independent thread gives the same spec 3309 figure already documented on this card, framing it as: the X80's power steering uses the same fluid as the manual transmission — ATF spec 3309, or an equivalent Type-4/multigrade ATF meeting that spec. Dixtron-III is also named as acceptable. The same spec applying to the AKPP reservoir (already noted above) suggests potential fluid interchangeability across the power-steering, manual-transmission, and AKPP systems — though always verify against the specific fluid's full spec sheet before cross-using^33343536.

Oct 2026 update — return hose leaking at the reservoir. Sergei Rogov found the power steering (ГУР) return hose (обратка) leaking at the reservoir (бачок) end ³⁷³⁸. His photo shows a wet, oily area with reddish stains around a pulley and the drive belt, though the hose itself is not clearly visible ³⁹. He asked whether Mazda 6 hoses fit or only FAW originals; nobody answered that part.

Oct 2026 — DAGGER steering rack: air and hiss. Valerii replaced the rack together with tie-rod ends using a DAGGER rack; bleeding the air was a struggle and the steering did not become lighter, which he puts down to the car's suspension loading ⁴⁰. He bled on a raised car and there was no noise at first ⁴¹, but after driving a hiss from the valve (золотник) of the fluid transfer appeared; the fluid showed no foam, so he suspects air is hiding somewhere and will wait to see whether it runs in ⁴²⁴¹. Victor says his own car always hisses from the rack and power-steering pump, and another car he looked at did as well, so the hiss may be normal — only the engine is not audible while the hiss from under the wheel annoys ⁴³.
