Rear springs — failure symptoms and diagnosis

Sagging despite new shocks and springs: if the rear suspension still sags after replacing both shock absorbers and springs, inspect all the rubber bushings (сайлентблоки) too: the rear lower control arm's longitudinal bushing, the stabilizer bar bushings, and the ball joints. Sagging after a shocks/springs-only replacement can indicate (1) worn bushings letting the geometry shift, or (2) asymmetric wear requiring the whole alignment (развал-схождение) to be rechecked — which may itself need adjustment of several bushings and stabilizer components, not just the shocks/springs 12.
Early rear-spring failure and Mazda 6 GG fix (April–May 2024): one of the community's earliest rear-spring reports — a left rear spring's upper coil cracked. Advice given at the time: if sourcing from Mazda, take the spring from a Mazda 6 wagon/estate variant ("сарай") 345. The owner then fitted used (contract) Mazda 6 GG rear springs, which installed "like original" 6, prompted by another owner separately wondering about reinforced/stiffer springs since the stock rear bottoms out on speed bumps with 2 passengers aboard 7. Ride height rose slightly on both sides afterward 8, with one commenter guessing the Mazda metal might simply be denser 9. The exact Mazda model/generation was not fully confirmed in the thread 10.
Metallic rattle from a partially broken rear spring coil: a distinct diagnostic point — a metallic rattling/clanging noise from the rear can indicate that a rear spring coil has partially broken, with the loose metal fragment striking the suspension component on movement. This is a mechanical-failure symptom, not a bushing/mount noise, and requires rear spring inspection and replacement 1112. Cross-reference: see the suspension noise diagnostic checklist for distinguishing this from other rattle sources.
Soft OEM rear springs bottom out under heavy load: when heavily loaded (cargo, passengers, mountain-pass driving), the soft OEM rear springs bottom out on the bump stops. Reinforced/stiffer springs or a pneumatic-suspension add-on are needed to stop the chassis or suspension from contacting the terrain or rubbing under load; pneumatic suspenders are reported as a better fix for this specific weak-spring/ overload scenario than static spacer blocks alone 1314151617181920.
Suspension geometry — X80 is heavier than the Mazda 6 the parts were designed for: the X80 weighs roughly 1,600 kg, but shares its spring and shock design lineage with the considerably lighter Mazda 6 GG (~200-250 kg lighter). This partly explains why stock springs can feel soft and handling can feel light, and why heavier-vehicle donor springs (e.g. the Kia Sorento cross-fit documented above) can noticeably firm up handling. Any major spring/shock swap changes ride characteristics and should be considered carefully for safety and controllability implications, not just fitment 212223.
OEM rear spring — upper-coil edge collapses under load; diagonal-cut fix: OEM rear springs can show upper-coil collapse/folding almost immediately once loaded. The sharp edge at the top of the coil acts as a stress-concentration point that scores the coil surface and eventually leads to breakage there. Community fix: carefully cut the corner edge of the top coil diagonally to remove the stress concentration point. Caution: this is a permanent modification to a safety-relevant part and may affect warranty 242526.
Front sits visibly higher than rear after independent front and rear spring replacement — unresolved cosmetic vs. structural question: after replacing both front springs (broken, OEM parts from the official FAW warehouse) and later both rear springs (correct part numbers but not purchased from an official dealer), one owner still sees the front arch sitting visibly higher than the rear ("as if rearing up") even though both axles now have "new" springs. Another owner reports the identical symptom: after fitting new Mazda-wagon rear springs plus spacers (not yet installed), the ride is firm and doesn't bottom out badly on rough bumps, but the thinner rear-spring rod diameter (versus the thicker Mazda rod) is blamed for occasional bottoming. Neither owner has confirmed whether the front/rear imbalance is purely cosmetic or affects the suspension's structural geometry; it remains an open question in the thread 272829.
Loaded behaviour. Victor finds the stock rear firm and good at smoothing bumps 30, yet with four people (340 kg) and about 150 kg of cargo he measured 42 cm to the wheel arch and set the headlight corrector to 2 31. Another owner whose springs were intact but sagging fitted 40 mm spacers 32. Victor ties rear sag and the front spring choice to the automatic (AKPP / АКПП) being about 35 kg heavier than the manual 31.
