Pneumatic air-spring bellows — general characteristics: available from different manufacturers (Russian, Belarusian brands). Typical operating pressure 0.9–1.0 bar; a 0.1 bar change in pressure noticeably changes ride height. Russian-brand bellows are stiffer, handle bumps better, and hold body height more consistently. Belarusian-brand bellows are softer and more compliant but less stiff in response. Bellows are rubber, 1–1.5cm wall thickness. Cold weather (-20°C) has minimal impact on performance — they warm up quickly once driven. Overall, bellows are more resistant to bumps and speed bumps than the standard suspension 1.
Rear-specific Belarusian air spring spec: size 200×85, described as softer than the stock spring, good quality, reliable installation 2.
Sagging-fix using Lanos/Sens/Nexia bellows: for sagging under heavy cargo, a full tank, and an LPG cylinder (59L), install 85×160mm pneumatic bellows sourced from Lanos/Sens/Nexia together with 2cm spacers. The factory bump stop must be removed and the spacer tip lightly machined to fit properly. Tested over 15,000 km without issues, described as performing like the factory suspension 3.
Bottoming-out ("probivanie") fix with cut-in bump-stop bellows: when the rear suspension still bottoms out on bumps even with new springs/struts/ buffers/spacers, one solution is installing pneumatic bellows in place of the standard bump stops. This requires cutting off the shock absorber's bump stop with a plasma cutter and welding a large washer in its place. Typical pressure ~0.8 atm, adjustable upward if needed. The same struts fit multiple donor vehicles (e.g. Nexia), but spacers must be matched. One owner reported 2+ years of successful use carrying 4 passengers plus full cargo without the suspension settling; springs/buffers alone did not solve the problem for this owner 4.
Pneumatic balloons (air springs) for the rear coil — fitment conflict: Fenox-brand pneumatic balloons with a side valve, sourced from Ozon, are sold in a "standard" 230x110mm size. Ozon product comments report this standard size does not fit directly inside the X80 rear coil spring. Workaround reported to make them fit: remove the factory bump stops/buffer spacers from the suspension to create clearance. Conflict: one user reported a successful installation with good results two months prior with no modification, while the product's own comments describe incompatibility without the bump-stop removal — treat direct fitment as unconfirmed and the bump-stop-removal workaround as the safer starting point 567.
Pneumatic suspension (Mazda-swap) size spec: for pneumatic suspension used together with a Mazda-donor rear suspension (see the Mazda 6 GG swap discussion), the reported balloon size is 200×85mm with a side-mounted valve (боковой сосок) — a different size than the Fenox 230×110mm balloon discussed above; match the balloon size to the specific installation rather than assuming one size fits both setups 89.
Side-valve pneumatic bags for rear coil — positive report (March 2026): a second, separate positive report for pneumatic (air) bags installed inside the rear coil springs — 2 bags + 2 bump stops, side-mounted valve, sold specifically for FAW Besturn X80 model years 2020 onward. The owner reports being very satisfied: for hauling something heavy, simply inflate the bags as needed. This corroborates the pneumatic-bellow fix already documented above as an effective solution for the soft-rear-spring/ overload scenario 1011.
Rear pneumatic air-spring conversion — general approach and Drive2.ru guide: an alternative rear-suspension modification replaces the coil springs with pneumatic air springs (пневмобаллоны) for adjustable ride height/characteristics: remove the bump stops (отбойники), install the air springs, and inflate to the desired pressure. A detailed step-by-step guide is published on Drive2.ru: 'Доработка задней подвески, установка пневмобаллонов' (https://www.drive2.ru/l/523642963557877749/), covering suspension disassembly, spring removal, and air-spring mounting. This is an advanced modification requiring real technical knowledge and equipment; community discussion at the time indicated some fitment details were still being worked out 12131415.
Pneumatic balloons for rear springs — 2020+ FAW-specific kit: pneumatic air suspension balloons (пневмобаллоны) sold specifically for the X80's rear springs (2020-present) are spring-integrated air units with a side-mounted check valve, sold as a 2-pack including bump stops, available on the Ozon marketplace. They improve suspension compliance and give adjustable load-carrying capacity 1617.
Pneumatic balloon conversion — before/after clearance at 0.6 atm: a separate first-hand pneumatic-balloon install report (same modification documented elsewhere on this card): inflated to only ~0.6 atm, ground clearance increased from "3 fingers" to "5 fingers," the ride felt slightly softer, cornering improved, and railroad crossings were noticeably smoother. The install required cutting/removing the bump stops (отбойники), and the system includes a manual inflation valve. The owner flagged some uncertainty about long-term durability, but reported still liking the setup after a longer trip a few days later 18192021222324.
Rear pneumatic-balloon install and pressure — detailed field notes (Sept 2024): one long-term pneumatic-balloon user (Женя) described his rear setup as "a fantastic thing." Asked for size and pressure, another owner (Олег Белоусов) gave detailed voice-note guidance: the factory bump stop needs to be removed (not the rычаг/arm itself — only a suspension-geometry re-check via alignment is needed after, not arm work); the spring itself is removed and reinstalled with the balloon fitted with its side valve. Pressure notes from his own experience: started at 1.1 atm ("colotushka" — jarring/harsh ride); settled on the brand's recommended minimum of ~0.8 atm; personally runs 0.9 atm and finds it "great" — still gets some bottoming-out on speed bumps at that pressure, but it's a major improvement overall. With 2–3 passengers aboard the ride firms up like leaf-spring suspension. He stress-tested it loaded with roughly 360 kg of cargo (12 sacks), and even at that load with pressure raised to ~1.1 atm, the ride stayed smooth. Warning against overinflating: pressure too high stiffens the ride into the body structure and causes harsh "bottoming-out" impacts rather than cushioning — 0.9 atm was his practical sweet spot. He also tried fitting OEM-spec ("obechaynye"/OEM-pattern) 16mm-wire Honda Stepwagon-sourced springs as an alternative to balloons; those sagged noticeably within one month, so he reverted to stock springs plus balloons 252627282930.
Valve/nipple choice — use a Lada ("Zhiguli") gold valve core, not the Chinese-supplied one: for the balloon's inflation valve/nipple, avoid the short-lived nipple that ships with cheap Chinese balloon kits — one owner who fitted Belarusian balloons switched to a Lada/"Zhiguli" gold valve core ("Жигулевский золотник") specifically, and reports it has lasted genuinely long-term (9 years, on a Peugeot wagon fitted with the same type of balloon, with zero maintenance) — versus the stock Chinese nipple, which reportedly fails within about a year 30.
"Broke something today" — where owners are sourcing rear springs (2024 thread): a rear-spring-failure report prompted a burst of replacement advice from Олег Белоусов: buy only from official dealers for a genuinely OEM part, or search wrecking yards ("контрактные разборки") for Mazda 6 springs specifically with at least 13–13.5mm wire thickness and 7 coils — cheap "obechaynye"/generic-brand springs are reported as reliably weak, sagging within about a month and leading to the bump stops striking inside the spring. Kayaba no longer manufactures a rear spring for this application; Bilstein was suggested as an alternative worth checking. OEM spring price at the time: ~1,700 RUB (RU market, September 2024). The same owner's practical recommendation: fit pneumatic balloons inside the springs regardless of which spring you use — even OEM-grade 7-coil springs — as extra insurance against exactly this kind of failure recurring 313233. A separate contributor (Олег Белоусов, continuing the same thread) reported a full day of driving, including ~30km of highway, on the balloon setup with no cornering lean and a noticeably quieter ride ("shelestит" — light rustling sound, no harshness); pairing 7-coil OEM-pattern springs with an added internal balloon was described as giving lasting, "forget about it" reliability 3435.
Balloon install procedure — bump-stop trimming detail (voice-note walkthrough): expanding on the install steps documented elsewhere on this card, for a 285mm balloon specifically: cut the factory rubber bump stop cleanly around the ring where the expanded/wider upper section begins — remove only that expanded portion, leaving the constant-diameter tube base intact; a rubber pad/spacer then sits in that spot. If the bump stop is left un-trimmed (just pulled out whole instead), the balloon seats crookedly/off-axis inside the spring and doesn't fit properly. Done correctly, the balloon seats snugly ("тюка в тюку") against the trimmed bump-stop base when the spring is compressed and the arm reinstalled, and inflates and performs correctly. Recommend sourcing Belarusian-brand balloons over Novosibirsk-brand — the Novosibirsk ones are reported as overly stiff/hard ("дубовые") and prone to problems 3637383940.
Pneumatic airbags in rear spring cavities — updated field report (Aug 2026): reinforcing the pneumatic-bellow reports already documented on this card, a further owner (Женя) reports the setup as "a wonderful thing." Installation detail specific to this report: the stock rubber bump stop must be cut off and replaced with the bump stop supplied in the balloon kit — the only real hurdle, since the X80's own rear springs are narrowed at both the top and bottom, limiting how a balloon can be fitted. Pressure guidance: about 0.6 bar for everyday driving, raised to 1.0+ bar when hauling heavy cargo (tested carrying 15 bundles of thick laminate flooring). Side effect: the rear end sits noticeably higher after install, requiring the headlights to be re-aimed 41424344.
Air bellows inside the coils. Женя fitted air bellows (пневмобаллоны) inside the rear coils of a 2020-onward X80 using a Yandex Market bellows kit and a single-circuit inflation kit with side nipple 4546. He inflated them to about 1 atm and loaded 15 packs of 12 mm laminate plus 200 kg of cement with no sag; the bump stop (отбойник) had to be cut shorter 4748. He quoted about 5,000 RUB or more for the installation service (RU market, Sep 2026) 47.
