Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
Oil versus gas dampers, cold-weather clunks, internal foaming, restoration services and the other failure symptoms owners report. Overview: Shock absorbers — overview and platform baseline. See also front damper type and brand experience.
Gas-oil dampers — general option overview: gas-oil (gas-filled) dampers improve handling and help prevent oil cavitation under load. 300+ variants are listed on Yandex Market, including recommended brands KYB, Sachs, Boge, Bilstein, Monroe (note: see the Sachs clunking warning in the damper-types paragraph below). Both front and rear variants are available; selection should be matched to the vehicle's model year 1.
Extreme cold (−20°C) failure — stock Tokico and new Stellox both affected: at −20°C, one owner's stock Tokico dampers failed to return fully after compression (the shaft got stuck); new Stellox (Chinese) dampers fitted as a replacement performed poorly in the frost as well. Conflict: a more experienced community member ("Master") warned in advance that switching to Stellox would have no effect on this symptom, and the owner's actual cold-weather experience with both stock and new dampers appears to bear that warning out — suggesting the issue may be inherent to the damper design/fluid at extreme cold rather than brand choice 234567.
Front shock rattling — internal foam/cavitation degradation, a systemic design issue (March 2026): X80 factory front shocks develop internal foaming/cavitation over time (typically 5–7 years), causing persistent metallic rattling and knocking from the front suspension. Symptoms intensify with vehicle age and load. This is reported as systemic — replacing with another OEM unit does not necessarily fix it, since new OEM shocks can exhibit the same noise again after only 2–3 weeks if the original design is retained. Recommended alternative: quality aftermarket shocks, with Mazda 6 GG shocks again reported as a superior option over continuing with stock-design OEM replacements 89101112.
Damper types and brand guidance — oil vs. gas, GG vs. GH generation notes (April 2026): almost all automotive shock absorbers are hydraulic (oil-based); the gas (nitrogen) charge is a pressure backup that prevents oil foaming, not a replacement for the oil damping itself. Oil-filled types with proportionally less gas give a softer ride. For the X80, Kayaba and Tokiko (non-FAW-branded Tokiko, i.e. the genuine Japanese brand rather than a rebadge) are the community-preferred brands. Avoid Sachs — reconfirms the clunking/clicking complaints already noted from multiple independent owners. The GG vs. GH suspension generations differ mechanically: GG has shorter damper strokes, GH has longer strokes and a different spring count per wheel side — relevant when cross-shopping Mazda-sourced dampers and springs together 1314151617181920212223242526272829.
Stiff ride and noisy front struts at 87,000–106,000 km — no failures yet: several owners report the suspension feels stiff and the front struts squeak around the upper mount area over bumps at this mileage range, without any outright failure. Mazda-strut replacement is suggested as a comfort upgrade, but some owners question whether it's worth the cost at this mileage if nothing has actually failed 3031323334.
Damper restoration service (gas-oil repressurization) — Moscow shops: some Moscow specialty shops offer damper (strut) restoration: pressure-testing and re-sealing on a dedicated bench followed by a fresh gas-oil charge, claimed to restore a damper to near-new condition for another ~100,000 km. This is different from a simple top-up and needs industrial equipment. Not recommended as a routine fix for safety-critical suspension parts — replacement is the safer default — but some owners report success with restored struts when new-part cost is prohibitive 35363738.
Front shock clunk/tap in cold weather — common, hard to pin down, often deemed within normal limits: a frequently reported cold-weather symptom (below ~0°C): clicking, tapping, or clunking from the front end over bumps, often asymmetric (louder on one side than the other). Multiple owners report the same thing, including cases at very low mileage (under 100,000 km). A shop technician who rode along and listened concluded it could simply be how the shock absorbers work in the cold and found no play or wear on inspection. Community consensus: described as a "frequent phenomenon, difficult to resolve completely" — no universal fix has been identified. Suggested underlying causes (unconfirmed): piston seal behavior changing in the cold, spring preload shifting with temperature, or normal manufacturing-tolerance stack-up that only becomes audible when parts contract in freezing weather. Worth cross-checking against the separate suspension noise diagnostic checklist, since caliper guide pins are a commonly confirmed alternate cause of a very similar cold-weather clunk 39404142434445.
