Replacing shocks at home, spring compressors, bump stops (отбойники), dust boots, strut support bearings, mounting bolts and other installation details. Overview: Shock absorbers — overview and platform baseline. See also shock absorber replacement and front strut dust boots sourcing.

Bump stops (отбойники) reduce knocking: the X80 uses soft dampers, with much of the spring load concentrated on the rubber bump stops rather than the shocks themselves. Rear knocking/clunking noise while driving was resolved by replacing the rear bump stops, with a bonus softer ride feel afterward. Front bump stops are recommended for replacement on the same schedule for consistent comfort 1. A separate report confirms the same fix: a dull, low-speed metallic clunk traced to worn shock-absorber bump stops was eliminated by replacing the rear units 2.

Front shock dust boot sourcing: front shock-absorber dust boots (пыльники) are available via Kitparts and Ozon catalogs. An attempted substitute — Lynx-brand boots intended for a Mazda CX-5 — did not fit (the seals were too short). A working alternative: a Lynx-brand set of two dust boots plus two bump stops (отбойники), sourced through KitZap with delivery 3.

Front strut support bearing (опорный подшипник) — pricing and sourcing: the front strut top support bearing is sold as two separate components — the housing/cup (чашка) and the bearing itself (подшипник). Factory pricing: cup 2,000 RUB (RU market, July 2025), bearing 1,200 RUB (3,200 RUB combined). One shop's retail price for the cup alone was 1,060 RUB (RU market, July 2025). Sourcing options: kitzapchasti.ru (sometimes doesn't list the bearing as a separate SKU), kitparts.ru (order-only, ~4-day wait), and zzap.ru (a parts aggregator that shows multiple store options by part number). Some retailers list only the cup, without the bearing as a separate purchasable item 4.

DIY rear shock replacement — needs a lift/pit, spring compressor essential (Sept 2025): rear shock replacement is not practical at home without a vehicle lift or service pit; even with an impact wrench and a helper, budget 2+ hours per side 567. The spring must be compressed for removal/installation — one owner's first pair of compressors failed (snapped) on the very first strut and again while releasing the last one, while a second, sturdier compressor set held up 8910. A recommended source: a 280mm double-hook spring compressor set (2 pcs) from Ozon, well lubricated before use; several owners report it holding up well, though a poor-quality compressor can snap and cause injury (numbed hands reported after one such failure) 11121314.

Front strut top mount ("опора") — also sourceable from FAW B50 (Feb 2026): a brief confirmation, separate from the SAM-4101/GJ6E strut mount bearing prices and sourcing in the prices and costs card — the front strut top mount itself can be sourced from the FAW B50 as a cross-fit part 15.

KYB shocks — longer stroke makes spring work much easier: KYB aftermarket shocks have a significantly longer stroke than the factory X80 units, so compressing the spring for install/removal is far easier and does not require a spring-compressor press — the stock shocks' very short stroke is what makes that job hard 1617.

Replacement front shock rod stub too long (38mm vs 35mm spec) — machine-shop fix: when replacing front shocks at high mileage (100,000+ km), a new unit can arrive with a longer rod stub than spec (38mm measured vs the correct ~35mm), throwing off suspension geometry and causing rattling/rubbing. Diagnosis: measure the rod stub length against the original (or with a ruler if the original isn't available). Fix: a machine shop shortens the stub by cutting ~2cm off, then the strut is reassembled. One owner discovered this at 130,000 km, after already replacing two front hub bearings, during a suspension service — always verify both old and new shock condition/dimensions before installing 1819202122.

Rear shock mounting bolts seized in rubber sleeves at 62,000 km: at 62,000 km, rear shock mounting bolts had corroded/bonded (galvanic action between the rubber sleeve and metal bolt) so badly they had to be cut out with an angle grinder. Prevention for future installs: coat the bolt with graphite lubricant or Lithol-type grease before assembly 232425.

Rear shock dust boots — Mazda 6 KYB kit, cheaper than some local sources: dust boots and rebound bump stops (пыльники + отбойники) for rear shocks are available as a Mazda 6 GG-fit KYB 910 107 kit (Mazda 6 '02+ fitment); found cheaper on Ozon than some alternative sources; one installer reports successful use 2627.

Factory assembly hooks on the shocks — safe to remove, plus a cheap angle-adjustment tool: stock X80 shocks have small hooks/brackets that look like manufacturing/assembly aids (likely used to hang the strut on the line before final bolting) — they serve no function after installation and tend to catch on things during removal/installation, especially off a lift. Many owners recommend simply removing them. A cheap (~100–1,000₽) fuse-box-style tool can help set the strut angle correctly during installation 28293031.

Metallic clank after rear shock replacement — likely bushings, not a loose fastener: if a metallic knocking sound appears specifically after replacing the rear shock absorbers, and a visual re-check finds everything properly torqued, the noise is more likely coming from worn suspension bushings (сайленты) than an actually loose fastener — inspect the bushings rather than continuing to re-check the shock mounting hardware 3233.
