Front and rear shock part numbers, what Mazda 6 GG (and GH) shocks fit, and the fork (вилка) swap that Mazda-sourced struts require. Overview: Shock absorbers — overview and platform baseline.
Front suspension rebuild — component-by-component recommendations: when refreshing the whole front suspension, community guidance is: (1) keep the OEM motor mounts (опоры) — no routine replacement needed; (2) source springs from a Mazda 626 GG (direct compatibility, see the front springs card for cross-fit detail); (3) use OEM suspension arms where available, or a quality aftermarket/used alternative otherwise; (4) keep the OEM top strut mounts unless actually worn; (5) consider aftermarket shocks if OEM units are unavailable 12.
Shock length/fitment caution on a full rebuild: when rebuilding the complete front suspension (springs + dampers together), check carefully — aftermarket shocks can be a different length than OEM (one case was 2cm shorter), which requires verifying spring protrusion before installation. OEM parts are rarely available, making a fully matched OEM set hard to source 3.
"Fork" fitment note: when fitting aftermarket suspension, the mounting fork (вилка) on some aftermarket parts is slightly thicker than the original, so Mazda-specification forks are needed rather than a direct OEM swap. This came up in the context of spring/shock selection during a suspension refresh 4.
Kayaba (Mazda 6 GG) shocks require donor control arms: Kayaba shock absorbers pulled from a Mazda 6 GG can be physically fitted to the X80 front suspension, but not into the OEM X80 mounting fork without modification — the original FAW control arm has a 46mm mounting hole, while the Kayaba shock mounts in a 42mm hole. Workaround: source the Mazda 6 control arms/forks together with the shocks so the hole size matches; installing a Mazda-generation shock into an unmodified X80 fork does not work 5.
Rear shocks — Mazda GG fitment, KYB premium option (Sept 2025): rear shock absorbers from Mazda 6 GG fit the X80 6. A premium alternative is KYB, reported to be higher quality but with long lead times (~25 days from Asia) and a steep price 78.
Front shock/strut sourcing — Mazda 6 GG fitment requires the Mazda fork too (Sept 2025): reinforcing the Kayaba/Mazda-fork note already on this card, KYB Kayaba shocks (KYB part numbers 341352 front-left, 341351 front-right, cross-referencing Mazda part numbers GJ6A34711A/GJ6A34911A for the matching fork/spindle) are widely recommended if sourced from a Mazda 6 GG — but installing a Mazda-generation front shock into the X80's own fork requires swapping in the Mazda fork as well; the two forks are not interchangeable 910111213141516.
Aftermarket shock diameter mismatch — thicker than OEM, plus a separate stripped-thread failure: a separate report describes a purchased aftermarket front strut with the fork's clamping thread stripped, causing a knock while turning; the same owner notes the replacement struts received were physically thicker in diameter than the original FAW units 17.
Mazda-fork swap — bolt specification and sourcing (Oct 2025): when swapping to Mazda front suspension forks, the X80's own bolts do not fit the Mazda fork holes. Required spec: M8 fine-thread, 5–6cm length. Retail sourcing (e.g. Avtopiter) runs about 300 RUB (RU market, October 2025) per bolt, but generic hardware-store bolts of this spec reportedly do not work and can mean a week's wait to source correctly — the community's practical recommendation is to buy complete fork assemblies from a dismantler (разборка), with their original bolts included, to avoid separately sourcing this hard-to-match bolt 18192021222324252627.
Front struts — Mazda 6 GG incompatible without a fork swap, OEM part numbers (Nov 2025): reinforcing and quantifying the "2mm thicker" incompatibility already noted on this card: X80 front struts are not directly compatible with Mazda 6 GG because the X80's strut body is 2mm thicker than the Mazda spec — a Mazda strut only works with a matching Mazda fork, not the X80's own fork. OEM X80 strut part numbers: 5CA034700 (right), 5CA034900 (left). Recommended sourcing: genuine FAW parts, or a complete used strut+fork assembly from a dismantler (cheap) rather than mixing components across platforms 28293031323334.
Front shock/Mazda 6 incompatibility — independently reconfirmed (Dec 2025): a separate thread independently reconfirms the same 2mm cup/strut-thickness mismatch between FAW and Mazda 6: Mazda front shock absorbers cannot be used without also swapping the fork/strut assembly; OEM FAW shocks are recommended as there are no true Mazda cross-fit alternatives for the shock alone 353637.
Premium path — KYB/Monro shocks require a fork swap (April 2026): KYB and Monro shocks (Japanese, higher quality) require replacing the forks with Mazda-spec forks (narrower rod diameter) — consistent with the fork/strut-thickness incompatibility already documented above on this card. The advantage of doing the fork swap is unlocking a wider selection of compatible springs; the tradeoff is the added cost of new forks 383940.
Kayaba shocks in Mazda forks — noticeably softer ride, upper-mount fit unconfirmed: one owner reports buying Mazda struts/forks (вилки) separately and fitting Kayaba shocks inside them — "the car became unrecognizable, soft like a Japanese car." Community reaction was mixed: some want to try the same swap, others warn that current Kayaba stock is inconsistent quality ("50/50 luck") and recommend genuine-Japanese or German Sachs units instead — though Sachs is flagged for clunking complaints (see the damper types card). Open question: whether the complete strut assembly (fork + Kayaba shock + upper mount/bearing) bolts on directly, or whether the upper strut mount/bearing needs separate sourcing, was not resolved in the thread 414243444546.
Mazda 6 GG vs GH struts — rod/stroke length mismatch with springs: Mazda 6 GG struts have a longer-stroke rod (~200mm) than GH struts (~180mm). GH-spec springs fit properly on GH struts, but leave roughly a 5mm gap when mounted on GG struts instead — a visual side-by-side comparison confirms the upper-eye and stroke-length differences that cause this mismatch. Match spring generation to strut generation (both GG or both GH) rather than mixing 474849.
Front strut has a welded, X80/GG/GH-specific mounting eye — generic shocks won't fit: the FAW X80 front suspension uses a welded-eye strut-tower mount unique to the X80/Mazda-6-GG/GH platform family. Aftermarket shocks with a different eye geometry will not fit, and Mazda GG/GH shocks with mismatched eye geometry can throw off suspension geometry if forced. Practically the only cross-fit options are Mazda GH-platform parts (including CX-5-sourced units, unconfirmed) or sticking with X80-spec replacement shocks 505152.
Complete Mazda 6 GG shock+fork swap — a 4-month, 18-cycle sourcing ordeal: one owner's account of converting to Mazda 6 GG-sourced shocks (with adapted mounting brackets/forks) took 4 months and 18 full suspension disassembly/reassembly cycles, with repeated alignment/vibration-stand sessions, before landing on a working combination — illustrating just how much trial-and-error the Mazda-fork swap (documented elsewhere on this card) can take in practice. Reinforced (усиленные) spring/shock variants are also available for this swap 535455565758596061.
Front forks + Kayaba shocks, one turn cut off the spring — "like a rocket": a simpler version of the same swap: installing Mazda 6 GG front forks (control arms) together with Japanese Kayaba shocks, cutting one coil off the front spring for clearance. Reported handling result: excellent — "just a rocket." The same owner planned to repeat the swap on the rear axle next 62636465.
