Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

Stock/OEM configuration: 215/60 R17 (also written 215/60/17R), on ET45 wheels, 7–7.5J rim width 12. Confirmed alternates that fit without rubbing: 225/60/17 (very common, most owners run this without issue) and 225/65/17 (confirmed by multiple owners, used year-round) 13.

Winter alternatives: 215/65 R16 (slightly lower profile than stock, cheaper, softer ride from the taller sidewall) or 225/60/16 (better snow performance, wider footprint) 42. Taller/higher-profile options such as 225/55/17, 225/60/17 or 235/60/17 are also used for winter — a taller sidewall improves comfort on rough roads 43. One unattributed post also mentions 215/65/17 as viable (~1.2cm lower than stock) per tire-size calculators, though not independently confirmed 5.

R20 wheels with 245/40 tires give a very low profile: stiff ride, limited tire selection, and expensive options — not recommended for most owners 4.

Fitment/appearance notes: 225/60/17 is the de-facto standard and works for most owners; 225/55/17 sits about 2cm lower and visibly changes the car's stance; 235/60/17 is used by some as a comfort-oriented upgrade 67. Rim guidance: keep ET around +45 (±2–3mm tolerance) to avoid stressing the suspension; minimum wheel center bore (DIA) 67.1mm for clearance; a 6.5J rim pairs well with 215mm-wide tires, 7–7.5J is better suited to 225mm-wide tires 2.

Disagreement on tire profile: some owners prefer the 55-series profile for sharper handling and agility; others prefer the 60-series for ride comfort and factory-look proportions. Both are reported to work well with no known downsides beyond personal preference 67.

Winter tire cost/performance comparison (Sept 2024, Irkutsk, RU market): Chinese-brand winter tires (225/55/17) performed adequately and cost about 6,900 RUB per tire; premium brands (Continental, Michelin) cost 23,000+ RUB per tire. Continental stayed flexible down to -40°C; a Bridgestone tire in the same test was less flexible in extreme cold. Budget-conscious owners reported Chinese tires as adequate for 1–2 seasons at a much lower cost, treating them as a rotation/replacement strategy rather than a long-term investment 8.

Speedometer accuracy vs. tire size: on stock tires the speedometer reads inaccurately fast — a real 130 km/h shows as roughly 137 km/h. Fitting the larger 225/65/17 tire improves accuracy but adds about 1.7cm of ride height. Recommended pressure across sizes is 2.2–2.6 bar, which also improves comfort. Unlike some other brands (e.g. Renault), the speedometer discrepancy on the X80 cannot be corrected via OBD. On 225/65 tires the speedometer reads more accurately; going to a lower 60-series profile reduces accuracy further 9.

Clearance gained by tire size — measured deltas vs. stock (Sept–Nov 2025): reinforcing and quantifying the fitment notes above, several owners report the actual clearance/diameter increase over the stock 215/60R17: 225/60R17 adds about +6mm; 215/65R17 adds about +11mm; 225/65R17 adds about +17mm and roughly +34mm to overall tire diameter. 225/60R17 was independently described as fitting well with no rubbing and being close to the practical maximum diameter for the stock arches; 225/65R17 fits without rubbing in normal driving but rides noticeably softer than 215/60R17 1011121314.

225/50R17 — too low-profile, not recommended: 225/50/17 was specifically flagged as too low a profile for the X80 (described as "electrical tape"-thin), unlike the 55–65 series options documented above 1516.

225/65R17 — light contact at full steering lock (multiple independent reports): several owners confirm 225/65R17 fits for normal driving but lightly scuffs/touches the wheel-arch liner at full steering lock in both directions; described consistently as minor/non-critical rather than a fitment failure. One owner running 225/65R17 as a winter tire plans to switch to 215/65R17 instead, feeling 225/65 is oversized for winter use 1718192021.

Speedometer error scales with tire size — additional data points: extending the speedometer-accuracy note above, one owner fitting 225/65R17 reports the stock speedometer's over-read (previously ~-6km/h error) is corrected; going the other direction, a smaller/different tire combination produced a +9 km/h over-read that could not be corrected via software on the stock ECU. General rule reported: the speedometer error grows with speed. Note the odometer and average-speed reading are not affected — they stay accurate regardless of tire size, only the speedometer needle itself over-reads on stock-size tires 2223242526.

18-inch wheel fitment: the X80 accepts 18-inch wheels; recommended size 225/60R18 fits without issues (confirmed on the restyle/facelift body). Trade-off: 18-inch wheels are more sensitive to road surface defects (potholes, cracks, small rocks) than the stock 17-inch setup 27282930.

215/65R17 front tire rubs inner fender — downsize front to 215/60R17: the OEM tire size 215/65R17 rubs against the plastic inner fender liner. Fix: downsize the front tires only to 215/60R17 (keep the rear at the original 215/65R17). This reduces tire diameter by roughly 5% per wheel and clears the fender without affecting rear suspension geometry 3132.

Perceived stiffness is often trim rattle and tire choice, not the suspension itself: the X80's ride can feel stiff mainly because of loose interior/plastic trim rattling and road noise, rather than actual suspension rigidity. To improve perceived comfort: fit 215/65 or 225/65 tires with a soft sidewall (look for "Comfort" branding rather than "Extra Load"/reinforced tires), and avoid over-inflating. Separately, removing/securing loose interior trim (door panels, sender covers) reduces rattling and noticeably improves the feel of the ride. Wheel/tire choice has more impact on perceived comfort than suspension stiffness itself 3334353637.

215/65/17 vs 225/65/18 — comfort trade-off, and rubbing risk at full lock: the X80 supports both stock 215/65/17 (more comfortable, absorbs bumps better) and 225/65/18 fitments; some owners also run a 60-profile alternative (225/65 -> lower profile trades comfort for a firmer feel). Larger-profile (higher sidewall) tires give a noticeably softer ride. Caution: slight rubbing against the fender liner at full steering lock can occur depending on suspension condition/load, regardless of size — always verify fitment before buying 383940414243.

Tested tire-size fitment results (June 2026): consolidated community fitment testing beyond stock 215/65R17 — (1) 235/65R17: rubs at full compression, too wide, avoid; (2) 225/65R17: fits well, comfortable, full turning radius normal; (3) 225/60R17: also fits; (4) 225/55R17: mathematically close in diameter to 235/50R17, marginal fit; (5) 235/55R17: fits per one report. Changing aspect ratio (e.g. 65→55) lowers ride height, and combining a lowered front (via spring modification) with 235-wide tires reduces ground clearance on rough terrain — one owner who lifted the front 20mm with springs and the rear with ~10mm (real) spacers still bottomed out on uneven ground. Larger wheels/tires generally improve handling but require a suspension-geometry check first. Regional tire supply varies — some areas stock only premium brands (AGC, FYG, XYG) 4445464748495051525354555657.

Larger wheels increase hub-bearing and CV-joint/driveshaft load — general engineering consideration: going up in wheel/tire size increases the rotational load and stress on the hub bearings and CV axles/drive joints, roughly proportional to the radius increase. This isn't a specific failure report but a standing engineering consideration when upgrading from stock sizes: larger wheels mean higher bearing wear rates over time and a higher chance of earlier component failure — worth weighing against the ride-height/clearance benefits documented elsewhere on this card, and relevant background for the hub bearing cards 58.

225/65 vs. stock 215/60 — one owner's no-rub experience at full lock: one additional data point on the already-documented 215/60 vs. 225/65 comparison: 225/65 (about 2cm larger overall than the factory 215/60) is reported by this owner to improve ground clearance for off-road use without fender rubbing at full steering lock — note this contradicts the "light contact at full lock" reports already on this card from other owners, so rubbing risk appears to depend on specific wheel offset/suspension condition rather than being universal. With the factory 215/60 size, this owner notes the tire doesn't reach the fender lip in the normal (non-turned) position 59606162636465.

225/60/17 confirmed again — replacement urgency, and mixed-tread-pattern question: another owner needed to replace a non-repairable flat and confirmed 225/60/17 as a safe, brand-agnostic replacement size for the stock 215/60/17 66. A separate question about whether mixing two different tire tread patterns on the same axle causes problems went unanswered in this thread — treat as an open question, not a confirmed safe practice 67. Matching wheels (rim/offset combination) shown by another owner were separately confirmed by the community as fitting the X80 6869.

Conflict — 215/65 R17 recommended as "standard," 225/65 R17 discouraged (contradicts other reports on this card): in a newer thread, one contributor recommended fitting the 215/60/17 factory size specifically to fix front-wheel rubbing on the inner plastic fender liner, and separately another owner stated 225/65/17 tires were "heavy and inconvenient," rubbed slightly at full steering lock, and hurt acceleration/fuel economy — switching to 215/65/17 "fit perfectly" by comparison 707172. This directly conflicts with the earlier, higher-confidence reports elsewhere on this card (sourced from a separate long thread) that 225/65/17 is a confirmed, rubbing-free fitment used year-round by multiple owners — treat 225/65/17 fitment as disputed and dependent on wheel offset/ alignment condition rather than settled either way 7374757677. Asked to confirm real-world experience with 235/55 R17 specifically, the same contributor who reported the rubbing/economy issues with 225/65/17 above replied that 235/55 R17 is "practically stock," just with a wider tread, and expected it to be fine 7872. Separately, one MT-gearbox owner running a staggered winter setup (215/60 rear, 215/55 front) reported noticeably livelier acceleration feel versus a matched-size setup — an anecdotal, single-owner data point, not a general recommendation 79.

Wheel/tire rubbing on inner plastic fender liner — check clips and offset before blaming tire size: when front wheels rub against the plastic inner fender liner (подкрылок) while turning, check two things before assuming the tire size is at fault: (1) wheel offset (ET) — verify it matches spec; (2) whether the plastic fender-liner clip has come loose, which alone can cause rubbing that looks like a tire-size problem. 215/65 R17 was described as the "ideal" tire for the X80 in this thread 7470768071.

Tire size vs. speedometer error — reference table: stock size 215/60/17 reads 8–9% high on the speedometer; the "optimal" size 215/65/17 reduces this to 4–5%; the maximum recommended size 225/65/17 further reduces error to 1–2% but may cause slight rubbing at full steering lock 81. A later, independent report gives consistent figures for two other sizes: both 235/55 R17 and 235/50 R18 measured 8–9% speedometer error — no rubbing was reported for either at these sizes. Switching to the 18" wheel size was said to improve handling/cornering, at the cost of roughly +1 L/100km fuel consumption from the added wheel weight and rolling resistance 82838485.
